What is red, white, green and the national pride of Italy? Sure, it is pizza! Classically topped with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. In the country’s national colors, pulled out of a wood-fired oven in Naples for the first time in 1889, and recently elevated to UNESCO heritage status. February 9 is celebrated every year as “Pizza Day”. Especially in Italy, but also in the USA. In Naples, the red-white-green poor man’s food has long since become culture and art. More than 3,000 pizza bakers knead and bake in the port city – which is also known for having the best tomatoes. And it’s a day to celebrate in the U.S. too, where nearly four billion pizzas are sold every year. This amounts to almost 10.5 kilos per capita per year. Americans like hot peppers best as toppings. In this country, artichokes, tuna and anchovies are becoming increasingly popular toppings. We at PMM are celebrating today, of course, because we have all the ingredients (for you) in stock: whether delicious tomatoes, tender tuna, sliced olives, hot peppers or even fiery jalapenos – all in the best ADRIA quality. We may even celebrate two days!
